1. Introduce flexible working - you may have to cut employee hours but if pitched correctly they’ll appreciate the continuation of work.
2. Prohibit overtime – those who rely on overtime may leave. However the employees who stay will still have work to do and you avoid a potential redundancy situation.
3. Change shift patterns - avoid offering a large amount of expensive night shifts to all employees. Legally, it can be quite tricky – even if there is an apparent contractual right to vary shift patterns. It does require employee consultation and a careful selling exercise.
4. Offer sabbaticals or unpaid leave. This will create instant cost savings as well as the retention of valued employees.
5. Implement pay cuts – this is the last resort to avoid redundancies.
